A global musical journey with Duo Beija-Flor, April 19th
Prepare to travel the world as the Vancouver Classic Guitar Society presents Duo Beija-Flor in a season-closing concert that promises an evening of vibrant, inspired music. On Saturday, April 19th, 2025, at 7:00 PM, flutist Marie-Noëlle Choquette and guitarist Charles Hobson take the stage at Pyatt Hall, inviting audiences on an intimate journey through cultures and soundscapes from across the globe.
Duo Beija-Flor’s concerts are renowned for their energy, emotion, and masterful musicianship. Whether they’re weaving intricate harmonies or bringing percussive rhythms to life on guitar, their performances are an experience to remember. “We complete each other musically,” Charles says. “Marie-Noëlle brings a contemporary sensibility, while my background in pop and percussion adds a different texture. Together, we create something unique.”
What’s In a Name?
Duo Beija-Flor’s name—Portuguese for “hummingbird” or “the bird that kisses flowers”—perfectly captures their musical spirit. “Just like a hummingbird moves from flower to flower, we explore different cultures through our music,” says Marie-Noëlle. Their repertoire includes stunning interpretations of Astor Piazzolla’s ‘Escualo’ and ‘Oblivion,’ Béla Bartók’s ‘Romanian Folk Dances,’ and Miyagi’s ‘Haru no umi’ (Sea in the Spring), each arranged with their signature touch.
Their music isn’t just about performance—it’s about storytelling. When arranging Piazzolla’s ‘Oblivion,’ they traveled to Buenos Aires to study with tango masters and premiered their version in Piazzolla’s hometown. “It was nerve-wracking, but when the audience applauded, it was such a beautiful reward,” Charles recalls. “Oblivion is all about memory—what we cherish, what we long for,” Marie-Noëlle adds. “It touches everyone.”
From Montreal to the World
Marie-Noëlle and Charles met while studying in Montreal, where they bonded over their shared love of unique musical arrangements. “We were in the same chamber music class, and she was looking for a guitarist crazy enough to play a wild contemporary piece. Apparently, I was the only one who said yes,” Charles laughs. That collaboration quickly evolved into a duo known for its intricate musicianship, rhythmic energy, and engaging performances.
More Than Just Notes on a Page
The duo’s approach to music is deeply personal. Marie-Noëlle describes the flute as an instrument that “comes from inside you” and connects directly to the soul. For Charles, the guitar’s versatility is what makes it special: “One day I can play classical etudes, and the next I can pick up my electric guitar just to have fun.”
