This event at the JCC is open to all. We are asking for a minimum $5 donation at the door. The performance will be about an hour and the JCC invites you afterwards to their cafe (located just outside the auditorium) for a reasonably priced lunch.
Alec describes the program -
The concert will open with a selection of well-known Spanish works. "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" by Tárrega is a piece synonymous with classical guitar. Following that are 4 of my personal favourite selections from "Castillos de España" by Fedrico Torroba. As the title suggests "Castillos de España" is a set of pieces inspired by the Spanish castles and landscapes across Spain. For this reason, I've paired Torroba's pieces with Tarrega's piece which is also inspired by the beautiful fortress and palace, the "Alhambra".
After visiting Spanish landscapes, I will play Suite No.2 in D by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. This is a less popular but beautiful work by the composer that explores the more traditional and tonal sides of his personality. Hints of Cuban folk melodies and harmonies poke through structures and textures inspired by Brouwer's more formal training.
The penultimate set of pieces consists of the first 3 etudes from Villa-Lobos "dozen etudes" for the guitar. Each one explores different technical and textural challenges on the guitar. Villa-Lobos is not afraid to put the performer to task with his demanding approach.
I will finish off the concert with a few of my own compositions from a set which I have been writing for a few years now. I've immensely enjoyed bringing new compositions to the JCC audience and I can promise that at least one of these pieces will be a premiere public performance. I hope audiences will enjoy listening to and exploring music never before heard!
